Recovery-friendly hotels near Picasso clinics in Vietnam

Where NZ dental patients stay after treatment in Da Nang, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City — districts, room features, and what to look for when booking for post-operative recovery.

New Zealand patients recovering from dental treatment at Picasso should stay within 15–30 minutes of their treating branch, choose hotels with 24-hour reception, reliable room-service soft food, and a fridge — the My Khe beach area for Da Nang, the Trúc Bạch or Old Quarter area for Hanoi, and the Thảo Điền district for HCMC.

Where you stay during a dental treatment trip affects your recovery more than most patients anticipate. The right district puts you close to soft-food cafés, a short Grab ride from the clinic, and in a quiet enough environment to rest properly. The wrong location puts you a long taxi ride from the clinic on days when you least want to be in a vehicle. This guide covers the practical options in each Picasso city.

Da Nang — accommodation zones

Da Nang has a clear geographic logic. The Picasso Hoàng Diệu branch is in the Hải Châu district, roughly central in the city. My Khe Beach (Bãi biển Mỹ Khê) is about 10–15 minutes east by car. The Vinmec branch is close to the Hoàng Diệu branch.

My Khe beachfront (most popular with NZ patients). A large number of hotels line the My Khe beachfront road from the Han River north to the airport zone. The area ranges from mid-range Vietnamese properties to international brands. The beach provides an obvious recovery activity — gentle flat walks along the promenade — without requiring transport. The trade-off is that the area is tourist-facing and can be noisy. Request a room that does not face the road if noise matters for your sleep.

Distance to clinic: 10–15 minutes by Grab. Cost: NZD 2–4 per ride.

Hải Châu district (closest to clinic, more local). Staying in the Bình Thuận or Hải Châu areas puts you within a few minutes of the Hoàng Diệu clinic on foot or by short Grab. More local in character — lower hotel density than the beachfront — but practical for patients whose primary concern is clinic proximity. Good pho, banh mi, and noodle restaurants at low price points. Less English signage than the beach strip.

An Thượng area (behind My Khe, mid-range). A quieter residential-meets-tourist area behind the My Khe beach strip. Smaller properties, more Vietnamese guesthouses, and a growing number of international cafés catering to longer-stay visitors. Good for patients on a second or extended trip who want more of a neighbourhood experience. Distance to clinic similar to beachfront.

What to request when booking Da Nang:

  • Room with a fridge (for smoothies, yoghurt, soft fruit)
  • 24-hour reception — particularly important for the first night post-surgery
  • Air conditioning controls in-room (not just hotel-lobby temperature)
  • A late checkout option if your return flight is in the afternoon

Hoi An — the day-trip and recovery extension option

Hoi An is 30–40 minutes from the Hoàng Diệu clinic by Grab. It is a practical option for the middle days of a 7–10 day treatment stay — specifically the 2–3 days between initial preparation appointments and the fitting of finals, when you have no clinic commitment.

Hoi An’s ancient town has excellent soft-food dining (pho, cao lầu noodles, steamed dumplings, soups), flat walking laneways, and a pace suited to recovery. It is not a clinic location — there is no Picasso branch in Hoi An. All treatment is at the Da Nang branch.

Patients staying in Hoi An for the middle days of a case need to factor in a 30–40 minute Grab to each Da Nang appointment. This is manageable but adds time and cost. Coordinate appointment timing with your patient coordinator before booking any Hoi An accommodation.

Beach resorts on the An Bàng Beach strip south of Hoi An are another option — quieter than My Khe, slightly further from the clinic (45–55 minutes), better suited to a final recovery extension after the last appointment.

See /vietnam/hoi-an/ for more detail on using Hoi An as a recovery base.

Hanoi — accommodation zones

The two Picasso branches serve different parts of Hanoi. Match your accommodation zone to your branch.

Trúc Bạch / Old Quarter area (Old Quarter flagship branch). The area immediately around the Old Quarter flagship at 16 Phố Châu Long is well-suited to recovery. Trúc Bạch Lake is a short walk — flat, calm, and low-traffic in the early mornings and evenings. The surrounding streets have a high density of pho, congee, and bún bò Huế restaurants — all soft-diet appropriate. Hotels range from small boutique guesthouses to larger heritage-style properties.

The Old Quarter itself is noisier — 36 streets of market traders and street food. Patients who need quiet sleep during recovery should look for properties on or near Trúc Bạch Lake or on the quieter streets south of the lake rather than in the core Old Quarter.

Distance to Old Quarter flagship: 1–10 minutes walking or by short Grab.

Westlake / Tây Hồ area (Westlake Square branch and adjacent accommodation). The Westlake area has a more residential, lower-traffic character than the Old Quarter. International restaurants, cafés, and a flat lakeside walk around Hồ Tây (West Lake) make it a practical recovery zone. Better for patients who want quiet over cultural immersion, or for patients whose treatment is at the Westlake Square branch.

Distance to Westlake Square branch: varies depending on exact location; 5–20 minutes by Grab.

What to request when booking Hanoi:

  • Heating for winter visits (October–March) — Hanoi can be genuinely cold; not all budget hotels have effective heating
  • A fridge for soft-food storage
  • A lift if you will have jaw or facial swelling that makes stairs uncomfortable
  • Quiet room facing an interior courtyard if you need sound control

Ho Chi Minh City — Thảo Điền district

For NZ patients using the HCMC Thảo Điền branch, staying in or near Thảo Điền is the practical default.

Thảo Điền (Quận 2). The area around the Picasso clinic at 25B Nguyễn Duy Hiệu is the most established expat-residential district in HCMC. Serviced apartments are common and often the preferred option for longer stays — kitchenettes allow patients to manage their own soft diet. International restaurants and Western-style cafés within the district serve soups, smoothies, and blended options easily.

Distance to clinic: varies; 5–15 minutes on foot or by Grab within the district.

The Saigon River waterfront promenade in Thảo Điền is the most walkable outdoor recovery option in the area. It is not the same experience as Da Nang’s beach or Hanoi’s lake — HCMC is an intense city — but the riverfront provides a reasonable low-traffic walking route.

Avoid: central districts (Quận 1, Bến Nghé) for recovery stays. The distance from the Thảo Điền clinic is 25–50 minutes in traffic, and the central districts are significantly noisier and more stimulating than most post-operative patients want. Central HCMC is worth a day trip once you are recovered; it is not where you want to be managing a soft diet and getting to the clinic twice.

Room features that matter for dental recovery

Regardless of city, the following room features materially affect comfort during a dental recovery stay:

FeatureWhy it matters
Fridge in roomYoghurt, cold smoothies, soft fruit, and prescribed post-op medications that require refrigeration
24-hour receptionFirst night after surgery; any unexpected issue during the night
Elevator / liftBending forward to climb stairs with jaw swelling or post-All-on-4 surgery is uncomfortable
Late checkout optionReturn flights are often in the afternoon; avoiding a timed checkout on a recovery day
Blackout curtainsPost-operative rest periods benefit from controllable light
Air conditioning in-room controlsWound sites and post-operative comfort are affected by temperature; you need individual room control, not hotel-wide temperature management

What to avoid:

  • Heavy nightlife areas during the first 3 nights. Noise, cigarette smoke, and the physical environment of nightlife venues are all risks to post-operative recovery and comfort.
  • Remote islands or locations more than 60–90 minutes from a hospital or clinic during the acute post-surgical phase. Phu Quoc island is a popular Vietnam destination, but it is not a suitable recovery base for the first 5–7 days after All-on-4 surgery.
  • Day trips requiring long bus journeys during the first 72 hours post-implant or All-on-4. Road vibration and the inability to rest properly in a moving vehicle are worth factoring in.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay at the beach after implant surgery?

Beach walking is fine once you are stable — typically from day 2–3 post-surgery if cleared by your dentist. Avoid sea swimming and beach sand contact near open socket sites during the healing phase. Sand and salt water carry contamination risk. Gentle promenade walking along the Da Nang seafront is a different matter from swimming, and is generally reasonable. Ask your treating dentist before any beach contact.

Should I stay in a hotel or an Airbnb after dental surgery?

Hotels are generally better for the first 1–2 nights after any surgical procedure. 24-hour reception, reliable room service, and proximity to the front desk if you need assistance matter more when you are in the immediate post-operative period. After the first few days, a serviced apartment with a kitchenette is often more practical for longer stays — more control over diet, ability to blend soft foods, and generally quieter for rest.

Does Picasso arrange accommodation for patients?

Picasso's patient coordinators recommend areas and can suggest properties that other NZ patients have used. The clinic does not book or manage accommodation directly. Patients book independently through their preferred channel — hotel booking platforms, loyalty programmes, or direct with properties. Coordinators are available to advise on districts and distances from the clinic when planning.

How far should my hotel be from the clinic?

Within 15–30 minutes by Grab or taxi is the practical upper limit for the first 3–4 days after a procedure. You may need to return to the clinic for an unscheduled check — having a long transfer on days when you are swollen and sore is avoidable. For veneers and crowns, where there is no surgical component, distance matters less. For implants and All-on-4, staying close to the treating branch during the acute phase is advisable.
