Vietnam for dental treatment — why Kiwis choose it over Thailand, Turkey, and Bali

Why New Zealand patients choose Vietnam for dental tourism: Picasso Dental Clinic across 4 cities, NZD-transparent pricing, direct Auckland flights, English coordination, and honest trade-offs vs other destinations. May 2026.

Picasso Dental Clinic operates 6 branches across Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Lat in Vietnam — offering NZ patients Emax veneers from NZD 600/unit, Nobel Biocare implants from NZD 2,667, and All-on-4 from NZD 8,333, with direct Auckland–Da Nang flights (~NZD 1,005 one-way observed May 2026, 1 NZD = 15,000 VND).

Planning dental treatment abroad is a significant decision. Vietnam has become one of the most-chosen dental tourism destinations for New Zealand patients — not because it is the cheapest option in absolute terms, but because a specific combination of logistics, clinical transparency, and English-language coordination makes it easier to navigate than most alternatives. This page explains why, honestly, including where Vietnam’s advantages end.

Why Kiwis choose Vietnam for dental tourism

Vietnam’s appeal to NZ patients sits across five dimensions that compound each other.

Clinical infrastructure at Picasso’s tier. Picasso Dental Clinic uses the same named implant brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Neodent, Osstem) available in New Zealand dental labs — which matters when you return home and your NZ dentist needs to identify components. Diagnostics include CBCT 3D imaging and iTero digital scanning, not just 2D X-rays.

Transparent NZD pricing. The NZD quote Picasso issues before you book flights is itemised by treatment line, brand tier, and trip length. There is no “assessment on arrival” ambiguity. See /pricing/ for the published price matrix.

Direct flight access from Auckland. Air New Zealand has operated a direct Auckland–Da Nang route (~6 hours, ~NZD 1,005 one-way observed in 2026), which removes one of the key objections to Vietnam: a layover in Asia before treatment. Christchurch and Wellington patients connect one-stop to Hanoi at competitive fares.

English coordination. All Picasso branches operate in English and Vietnamese. Treatment plans, quotes, and post-op instructions are issued in English. Coordinators respond. This is not universally true across Vietnam’s dental sector — Picasso’s size and international patient history means this infrastructure exists.

Affordable recovery. Vietnam’s accommodation, food, and transport costs are significantly lower than NZ, Bangkok, or Budapest. A week in Da Nang (hotel, food, transport) adds approximately NZD 700–1,500 to your total trip cost, making the economics work even after flights.

When Vietnam is not the right choice

Vietnam is not the right choice for every NZ patient.

Treatment under NZD 4,000. The math often does not work once you add flights and accommodation. A simple crown or whitening is usually better done locally unless you are already travelling to Vietnam.

ACC-funded dental work. ACC-linked dental injury treatment is handled in NZ under NZ-contracted providers. Overseas treatment is not ACC-funded. Resolve ACC claims locally first.

Complex medical history without GP clearance. Some patients (cardiac history, bisphosphonates, immunocompromised) should obtain a GP medical fitness letter before any elective overseas surgery. See /nz-guide/gp-medical-fitness-letter/.

Acute pain or active infection. Stabilise with your NZ dentist first, then plan the definitive treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Why do New Zealand patients choose Vietnam for dental treatment?

Vietnam offers NZ patients internationally trained dentists, named implant brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, Osstem), transparent NZD pricing, direct flights from Auckland to Da Nang, and English-language coordination — at roughly one-third to one-fifth of NZ private clinic prices. As of May 2026, a 10-unit Emax veneer set costs approximately NZD 6,000 at Picasso vs NZD 15,000–25,000 at a NZ private clinic.

Is Vietnam better than Thailand for dental work for Kiwis?

Neither country is universally better — it depends on the case and the clinic. Vietnam's advantage for Kiwis: direct Auckland–Da Nang flight (no layover before treatment), Picasso's written NZD quote model, and comparable clinical technology to leading Bangkok clinics at similar or lower prices. Thailand's advantage: more established dental tourism infrastructure overall, though quality varies widely by clinic. See /compare/vietnam-vs-thailand/ for a full comparison.

Which city in Vietnam is best for dental treatment?

Da Nang is best for Auckland patients who want the direct flight and beach recovery. Hanoi suits Christchurch and Wellington patients (one-stop routes) and those having full-arch work. Ho Chi Minh City suits patients entering via southern Vietnam or combining with business travel. Choice of city does not affect clinical quality — all Picasso branches follow the same protocols.

Is Vietnam safe for dental treatment?

Vietnam dental safety depends on the specific clinic, not the country. Picasso uses named international implant brands, publishes clinician profiles, provides written NZD treatment plans, and offers a structured warranty. See /is-it-safe/ and /safety/honest-risks/ for a full honest assessment of the risks.

Do I need a visa to travel from New Zealand to Vietnam?

Yes — as of May 2026, NZ passport holders require a Vietnam e-visa (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, available at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, USD 25 fee). Apply at least 3–5 business days before travel. See /nz-guide/visa-for-kiwis/ for the full guide.

What languages are spoken at Picasso Dental Clinic?

English and Vietnamese are the supported languages across all Picasso branches. French and Russian are not supported.

How much can I save compared to New Zealand?

At May 2026 rates (1 NZD = 15,000 VND): a 10-unit Emax veneer set saves approximately NZD 9,000–19,000 net of treatment cost (before flights and accommodation). A single Nobel Biocare implant saves approximately NZD 3,300–4,300. A full All-on-4 arch saves NZD 16,000–25,000 before travel costs. Actual savings depend on your NZ clinic's pricing and the Picasso tier you choose.

Is Vietnam dental tourism regulated?

Vietnam's dental sector is regulated by the Ministry of Health, which licences dental facilities and clinicians. Picasso operates as a licensed multi-branch dental group. Overseas patients have no direct access to NZ Health and Disability Commissioner protections — warranty and dispute resolution flow through Picasso's SmileCare programme and private channels.
