New Zealand city pages on dentalholiday.nz compare local private dental prices in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and regional centres with our itemised NZD pricing and flight routes from each airport.
New Zealand has some of the highest private dental fees in the Asia-Pacific region. A single porcelain veneer in Auckland costs more than the return airfare to Hanoi. For patients facing multi-unit treatment plans — veneers, implants, or full-arch restorations — the cost gap between a New Zealand private clinic and an internationally accredited clinic in Vietnam is large enough that flying becomes the rational choice. This hub explains the numbers city by city, identifies where the break-even point sits, and links to detailed pages for every major NZ departure city.
Why your NZ city matters in the dental tourism calculation
The total cost of treatment abroad has two components: the clinic fee and the travel cost. Flight prices from New Zealand to Vietnam vary by departure city. Auckland has the most frequent direct and one-stop services to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, which keeps fares competitive. Wellington, Christchurch, and South Island cities typically add a domestic leg or a longer connection, pushing the bottom of the fare range up slightly.
That city-specific travel cost is not a footnote — it is the denominator in the savings calculation. A patient flying from Auckland paying NZD 1,400 for return flights faces a lower total cost than the same treatment quote than a patient flying from Dunedin paying NZD 2,200. The city hub pages on this site present the flight cost range specific to each departure point alongside the clinic fee, so you are comparing like with like rather than working from a national average that may not reflect your situation.
There is a second reason your city matters. NZ private dental fees are not uniform across the country. Auckland specialists and high-overhead CBD practices sit at the top of the NZ fee range. Regional centres and cities with lower commercial rents tend to price lower, though still well above Vietnam. Each city hub on this site uses locally sourced benchmark data rather than a single national figure.
2026 NZ city benchmarks vs our Vietnam clinic — summary table
Auckland figures are from the 2026 Auckland dental fee survey. Our prices are converted at the June 2026 rate of 1 NZD = 15,000 VND. All figures are per unit unless noted. For city-specific benchmarks outside Auckland, see the individual city hub pages linked below.
| Treatment | Auckland (NZ private) | Our Vietnam price |
|---|---|---|
| Porcelain veneer (Emax, per unit) | NZD 1,500 – 2,500 | NZD 600 |
| Dental implant — Nobel / Straumann | NZD 5,500 – 8,000 | NZD 2,667 |
| Dental implant — Osstem | NZD 4,500 – 6,000 | NZD 1,667 |
| All-on-4 (per arch) | NZD 18,000 – 35,000 | NZD 8,333 (Osstem) / NZD 14,667 (Nobel / Straumann) |
| Porcelain crown | NZD 1,600 – 2,500 | NZD 333 – 1,133 |
On veneers, our fee is roughly one quarter to one fifth of Auckland private rates. A 10-unit Auckland veneer case runs NZD 15,000–25,000; our fee is NZD 6,000. On a single premium implant the gross saving is NZD 2,833–5,333. On All-on-4, the saving against Auckland’s midpoint exceeds NZD 18,000 per arch before flights.
When the savings justify the trip
A return flight from Auckland to Hanoi costs between NZD 1,400 and NZD 2,200 depending on season and lead time. From Wellington and Christchurch the range is NZD 1,400 to NZD 2,800. Add NZD 600 to NZD 1,200 for accommodation across a 5–10 day stay and the total travel budget sits between NZD 2,000 and NZD 4,000 for most patients.
That means treatments where our fee saves more than NZD 4,000 to NZD 5,000 compared with your local NZ quote clear the break-even threshold with margin to spare. In practice this means:
Treatments that typically clear the threshold for NZ patients:
- 4 or more Emax veneers. Four veneers at Auckland rates cost NZD 6,000 – 10,000. Our fee is NZD 2,400. The saving exceeds flights for most departure cities.
- A single premium implant. One Nobel or Straumann implant at Picasso costs NZD 2,667. Auckland rates start at NZD 5,500. The gross saving is NZD 2,833 – 5,333. When combined with even modest additional treatment the threshold is crossed.
- Two or more implants. At that point the saving is NZD 5,666 – 10,666 on fees alone.
- All-on-4 or All-on-6 restorations. These produce the largest absolute savings. An Auckland All-on-4 quote at midpoint is roughly NZD 26,500 per arch. Our Osstem All-on-4 is NZD 8,333. Even after NZD 4,000 in travel costs the saving per arch is over NZD 14,000.
- Full-mouth reconstruction and smile makeovers. Combined cases involving multiple crowns, veneers, or implants generate savings in the NZD 10,000 – 40,000 range depending on treatment scope.
Treatments where dental travel is borderline or not cost-effective:
- A single crown. Picasso’s crown fee starts at NZD 333. The saving against Auckland’s NZD 1,600 entry point is NZD 1,267. That does not justify a return flight on its own. However, if a crown is added to a trip already justified by other treatment, the saving is real.
- Teeth whitening as a standalone treatment. The absolute fee difference does not clear the travel cost threshold.
- Routine check-ups and cleans. These are better handled locally.
The rule of thumb used by most NZ patients planning dental travel: if the NZ quote for your treatment plan exceeds NZD 8,000 – 10,000, it is worth obtaining an itemised quote from us and running the numbers. Below NZD 5,000 the case for travel weakens considerably unless you are combining dental treatment with a Vietnam holiday.
Which NZ departure city has the best routes
Auckland (AKL) has the most options. Several airlines operate AKL – HAN (Hanoi) and AKL – SGN (Ho Chi Minh City) itineraries with one stop, typically via Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, or Kuala Lumpur. Total travel time to Hanoi is 14 – 18 hours. Fares in 2026 typically range from NZD 1,400 to NZD 2,200 return. Auckland patients have the widest choice of airline and schedule, and can often find fares at the lower end of the range with 6 – 8 weeks of lead time.
Wellington (WLG) passengers usually connect through Auckland or Sydney. Return fares to Hanoi range from NZD 1,400 to NZD 2,800 depending on the connection used. The domestic leg adds roughly 1 – 1.5 hours to total journey time but does not materially change the economics for treatments above NZD 8,000.
Christchurch (CHC) operates similarly to Wellington with connections through Auckland, Sydney, or Melbourne. Return fares to Hanoi run NZD 1,450 – 2,250. Direct trans-Tasman flights from Christchurch to Sydney or Melbourne are frequent, and onward connections to Hanoi are well-served.
South Island and regional cities (Queenstown, Dunedin, Nelson) typically require a domestic connection to Auckland or a trans-Tasman hop. Return fares range from NZD 1,400 to NZD 2,800. The slightly higher travel cost does not change the break-even point for multi-unit cases because the the savings are large relative to travel costs even at the upper end of the fare range.
Patients from all departure cities should price flights before requesting a clinic quote, then add accommodation for their anticipated stay. Most treatment plans at Picasso requiring 5 – 12 working days can be completed in a single trip of 7 – 14 days including travel days.
