Dental care at Picasso — a guide for Dunedin patients

Practical guide for Dunedin patients considering treatment at Picasso Dental Clinic in Vietnam — flights, costs, recovery, and what your visit looks like from Dunedin.

Dunedin patients typically connect via Christchurch or Auckland to reach Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with return economy fares of NZD 1,500 to NZD 2,800 and treatment from NZD 2,667 for a Nobel or Straumann implant versus Dunedin private benchmarks of NZD 5,000 to NZD 8,000 per tooth.

Dunedin is a university city with a distinctly analytical population. Students, academics, healthcare professionals, and public-sector workers make up a large proportion of the patient inquiries we receive from the city. What they share is a methodical approach to decision-making: they want to understand the evidence before committing to anything, and they respond to transparent information rather than marketing.

This guide provides the practical information a Dunedin patient needs to assess whether treatment at our clinic makes sense. It covers what comparable treatment costs locally, how DUD connects to Vietnam, how long to plan for, and how the experience fits around the Dunedin professional calendar.

Prices are from the May 2026 Picasso price list (1 NZD = 15,000 VND). Local benchmarks are from the 2026 Dunedin dental fee survey. Travel data is from 2026 Dunedin logistics research.

Why Dunedin patients visit us

Dunedin’s private dental market offers a range of services from general dentistry through to specialist implant and cosmetic work. Fees are generally lower than Auckland or Queenstown, but for complex or multi-tooth treatment, the gap with our Vietnam prices remains significant.

A Dunedin patient facing an All-on-4 arch reconstruction at NZD 28,000 to NZD 45,000 locally is looking at a treatment cost that may exceed a semester’s income for a university professional, or several years of savings for a student or junior academic. The same procedure at our clinic — same Nobel Biocare or Straumann implant system — costs NZD 14,667. The comparison is stark even before accounting for the lower local benchmark.

Healthcare workers from Dunedin Hospital, a major regional employer, sometimes contact us after years of deferred treatment — too much time spent caring for others, not enough taken for their own dental health. Academics on fixed-term contracts manage leave carefully and often plan dental visits around semester breaks. Students, paradoxically, can be among the most organised patients when they decide to act: they plan around breaks, have clear timelines, and ask detailed questions.

We take all of these patients seriously, regardless of treatment size or budget. Our job is to provide accurate information so you can make an informed decision.

Dunedin dental fee context, 2026

The table below uses anonymous Otago and Dunedin private-practice benchmarks from the 2026 Dunedin dental fee survey. Picasso prices are converted at 15,000 VND per NZD.

All-on-4 per arch (Nobel / Straumann)NZD 28,000–45,000NZD 14,667NZD 13,333–30,333

Return economy flights from Dunedin via Christchurch or Auckland are NZD 1,500 to NZD 2,800. Accommodation for a 10-day visit in Vietnam adds NZD 1,600–3,000. For implant and All-on-4 treatment in particular, the net saving after travel costs remains large.

Getting from Dunedin to our clinic

Dunedin Airport (DUD) has domestic connections to main New Zealand centres and some trans-Tasman routes to Australia. Routes direct to Vietnam from DUD do not exist. The two primary connection options are via Christchurch (CHC) or via Auckland (AKL).

DUD–AKL then AKL–KUL–HANAir NZ + Malaysia Airlines / AirAsiaNZD 1,600–2,80018–22 hoursBudget option; check KUL terminal when transiting

The Christchurch routing is often simpler for South Island passengers — CHC has direct Singapore services that reduce the number of connections compared with an AKL transit. However, AKL offers more flight frequency and sometimes better fares on specific dates. Compare both options when planning.

Vietnam is UTC+7. Dunedin is NZST (UTC+13 summer, UTC+12 winter). The time difference is 6 hours in summer and 5 in winter. Long-haul travel from the South Island involves an overnight flight on some routing combinations. Plan your arrival day as a rest day with no clinical appointments.

How long Dunedin patients typically stay

The table below is our standard planning guide for Dunedin patients.

All-on-4 per archTrip 1: 5–7 days; Trip 2: 5–7 daysTwo trips, 3–6 months apart
Full smile makeover10–14 daysSingle extended trip

Dunedin patients who want to combine implant placement and veneer work in a single trip can often do so. We schedule the implant surgery early in the visit and proceed with veneer preparation and crown work during the same stay, with appropriate rest between surgical and restorative days. For patients with limited annual leave, this single-extended-trip approach is more efficient than two shorter trips.

Recovery planning for Dunedin professionals, academics, and students

Dunedin’s professional calendar has several distinct rhythms. University staff and students organise their leave around semester dates: mid-year break (July) and summer break (November to February) are the most common windows. Healthcare workers at the hospital manage rotating leave with more complexity.

Veneer and crown treatment involves no surgery. Sensitivity after preparation lasts 24–72 hours and is manageable with standard pain relief. The fabrication phase — several days of free time while the lab works — aligns well with a rest-and-recover approach. Most patients are fully comfortable and active from day three of a veneer visit.

Implant surgery requires more care. Post-placement swelling and discomfort are normal for 48–72 hours. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 5–7 days. Academic work — reading, writing, laptop-based work — is typically manageable from day three. Clinical shift work should not resume until at least 5 days post-surgery, and we would recommend against scheduling a shift the day after flying home.

For patients on academic contracts, we can schedule the treatment to end no later than the final clinical day, with departure two or three days later — allowing genuine recovery before the return flight. We do not recommend flying within 24 hours of any surgical appointment.

Students sometimes ask whether they can reduce the trip to 5 or 6 days to save on accommodation costs. For veneers, this is not clinically feasible — the laboratory requires 4–5 days. Do not compress the timeline. Plan accurately and budget for the right number of nights.

What your visit looks like

Below is a representative schedule for a Dunedin patient visiting for 10 Emax veneers over 9 days.

Day 1 — Travel and arrival. DUD to Christchurch, then connect to Singapore and Hanoi. Evening arrival. Check in, rest.

Day 2 — Consultation. Clinical examination, OPG review, shade discussion, and treatment plan confirmation. This is the planning session, not a preparation session — no clinical work on teeth today unless previously agreed.

Day 3 — Preparation and temporaries. Veneer preparation under local anaesthetic. Digital impressions taken and sent to our on-site laboratory. Temporaries fitted. Sensitivity expected and normal; most patients eat at a restaurant by evening.

Day 4 — Rest. Full free day. Sensitivity has reduced for most patients by the second morning.

Day 5 — Check-in. Brief appointment to confirm temporary fit and bite. Adjustments if needed.

Days 6–7 — Free. Laboratory fabrication underway. No clinical appointments. Hanoi’s Old Quarter, local restaurants, or quiet time at the hotel.

Day 8 — Try-in. Veneers placed dry for shade and shape review. Patient confirms the result before bonding.

Day 9 — Final bond. Veneers bonded and polished. Occlusion checked. Care instructions, warranty, and full treatment record provided.

Day 10 — Return travel. Fly Hanoi to Christchurch or Auckland and connect back to Dunedin.

Currency and payment

All quotes are in New Zealand dollars, based on 1 NZD = 15,000 VND (May 2026). Your itemised estimate is sent before you book flights. No surprises about cost before you commit.

On arrival, invoicing is in Vietnamese Dong. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at all branches via POS. ATM-withdrawn VND cash is also accepted. Notify your bank of your travel dates before departing — overseas card blocks are common without advance notice.

For larger treatment amounts, Wise or a similar service reduces currency conversion costs compared with standard bank card rates. Our accounts team can supply bank transfer details if you prefer to pay by VND transfer.

Preparing your records

Prepare the following before making contact. Detailed records allow a more precise initial quote.

  • A recent OPG (panoramic X-ray) — from your Dunedin dentist if available
  • Photographs: full-face smile, close-up upper and lower arch, left and right profile
  • Any treatment plans or quotes received locally
  • List of current medications, particularly those affecting bone health, bleeding time, or healing
  • Medical history: previous implants, bone grafts, systemic conditions, any allergies
  • A clear description of your main concern and desired outcome

If you have no OPG, send photographs and a written description. We will advise whether a conditional estimate is possible or whether we need imaging first.

How to start

Email [email protected] with your photos, OPG, and description of your needs.

We respond within 24 hours on business days. Our response includes an itemised NZD estimate broken down by procedure, material, and brand. No fee, no obligation — the estimate is provided so you have accurate numbers before committing to any flights or leave.

If your plan includes implants, All-on-4, or any treatment warranting pre-operative medical review, we will flag the GP fitness letter requirement in our first reply, giving you time to organise it before travelling.

Frequently asked questions

How do Dunedin patients get to Picasso Dental Clinic?

Dunedin Airport (DUD) has domestic connections and some trans-Tasman routes. Most patients to Vietnam connect via Christchurch (CHC) then Singapore to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or via Auckland (AKL) to Hanoi. Total door-to-door travel is approximately 17–22 hours. Return economy fares are NZD 1,500 to NZD 2,800.

How much do Dunedin patients typically save at Picasso?

For a single Nobel or Straumann implant: NZD 2,333 to NZD 5,333 before flights, compared with Dunedin benchmarks of NZD 5,000 to NZD 8,000. For 10 Emax veneers: NZD 8,000 to NZD 18,000 before flights. For All-on-4 per arch: NZD 13,333 to NZD 30,333 before flights.

How long do Dunedin patients need to stay in Vietnam?

Veneer and crown cases need 7–10 days in a single trip. Implant cases use a two-trip structure: 4–5 days for surgical placement, 3–6 months healing in Dunedin, then 5–7 days for the final crown. All-on-4 follows the same two-trip structure.

When is the best time for Dunedin patients to travel?

April to June and September to October offer the best combination of Vietnam shoulder-season conditions and Dunedin off-peak scheduling. University staff and students should avoid exam periods. Healthcare professionals from Dunedin Hospital may find the inter-semester periods most practical for extended leave.
