Veneer vs crown — which is right for your teeth?
Veneer vs crown for NZ patients: Picasso Emax veneer NZD 600/unit, Emax crown NZD 600/unit vs NZ private NZD 1,500–2,500. Honest clinical guide, May 2026.
A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of an intact tooth for cosmetic improvement (Picasso Emax veneer NZD 600/unit, non-prep NZD 733/unit, May 2026, 1 NZD = 15,000 VND), while a crown fully caps a tooth that is structurally compromised — cracked, heavily filled, or post-root-canal (Picasso Emax crown NZD 600/unit, Lava Plus NZD 800/unit); the distinction is clinical, not cosmetic, and Dr. Emily Nguyen assesses each tooth individually to confirm which restoration is appropriate.
Veneers and crowns are both porcelain restorations, and they can look similar from the outside. But they serve different clinical purposes: a veneer improves the appearance of a tooth that is structurally intact, while a crown restores a tooth that is structurally compromised. Choosing between them is not primarily an aesthetic decision — it is a clinical one determined by the condition of the tooth underneath.

What a veneer is
A veneer is a thin shell of porcelain — typically 0.5–1mm thick — that is bonded to the front-facing surface of a tooth. It changes the shape, colour, and surface texture of the visible face without touching the back or sides of the tooth.
Standard veneer preparation removes 0.3–0.5mm of enamel from the front surface to create space for the porcelain shell. This is permanent — once prepared, the tooth always requires a covering. Non-prep Emax veneers (NZD 733/unit at Picasso) require no tooth reduction and can be removed, but they suit a narrower range of cases: teeth that are slightly smaller, worn, or darker than desired, where adding a thin layer improves appearance without the tooth looking bulky.
Veneers are a cosmetic restoration. They do not reinforce a cracked tooth, they do not protect a tooth that has lost substantial structure to decay or previous large fillings, and they are not appropriate after a root canal where the tooth walls may be fragile.
Picasso Emax Press veneers carry a 7-year warranty. The preparation and fit are typically completed within a single trip of 7–10 days.
What a crown is
A crown is a full-coverage cap that fits over the entire visible portion of a tooth. To seat a crown, the tooth is reduced on all surfaces — front, back, and sides — by approximately 1–2mm, and the crown is then cemented or bonded in position.
Because a crown encircles the entire tooth, it holds a cracked tooth together, protects a tooth with large old fillings, and provides structural cover for a tooth that has had a root canal treatment (which removes the pulp and can make the remaining tooth walls more brittle). A veneer cannot perform any of these functions.
Crown material selection at Picasso:
- Zirconia — hard, opaque, best for back teeth under chewing load (NZD 467/unit, 5-yr warranty)
- Emax — glass-ceramic, translucent, best for visible front teeth (NZD 600/unit, 7-yr warranty)
- Lava / Lava Plus — ceramic-reinforced, strong with good aesthetics (NZD 733–800/unit, 10-yr warranty)
- ORODENT — premium multi-layer zirconia with high aesthetic depth (NZD 1,133/unit, 10-yr warranty)

When the veneer is right
- The tooth is structurally intact — no large fillings, no cracks, no history of root canal treatment.
- The concern is purely cosmetic: colour, shape, worn edges, minor spacing, or surface staining that does not respond to whitening.
- The patient wants the most conservative preparation that still achieves the desired appearance.
- Front teeth in the visible smile zone (upper and lower 4–10 teeth).
- Patient is not a heavy bruxist — heavy grinding can fracture thin veneer porcelain.
When the crown is right
- The tooth is cracked — a veneer provides no crack resistance.
- Large old amalgam or composite filling occupies more than roughly 50% of the tooth structure.
- The tooth has had a root canal treatment and the remaining walls are at risk of fracture.
- Previous veneer has failed and the tooth has been prepared — recrowning is the appropriate next step.
- The tooth needs to serve as a bridge abutment.
- Back teeth under significant chewing load where a full-coverage cap is more protective than a front-only shell.
Can you have both?
Yes — and this is common practice. Many NZ patients at Picasso have a combination of restorations across the same smile:
- Crowns on the upper and lower molars and premolars where structural damage or root canal treatment is present.
- Emax or Lisi veneers on the upper front 6–10 teeth for cosmetic improvement where the underlying teeth are sound.

How much does a veneer cost in New Zealand?
NZ private fees for porcelain veneers typically range from NZD 1,500–2,500 per tooth. These are indicative planning benchmarks based on publicly available private fee surveys — not a quote from any specific NZ clinic.
Can a veneer be placed on a cracked tooth?
No. A veneer only covers the front surface and provides no structural support. A cracked tooth — particularly a crack that extends through the enamel or into the dentine — requires a full-coverage crown that holds the tooth together and prevents the crack from propagating. Placing a veneer over a crack is not appropriate treatment.
Is a veneer reversible?
A standard Emax veneer requires 0.3–0.5mm of enamel to be reduced from the front surface during preparation. This is minimally invasive, but the tooth reduction is permanent — the tooth will always require a covering after preparation. Non-prep Emax veneers (NZD 733/unit at Picasso) require no tooth reduction and are fully reversible, but candidacy is more limited — they suit teeth that are slightly smaller or darker than desired.
What is the difference between Emax and Zirconia for crowns?
Emax (lithium disilicate) is a glass-ceramic that offers excellent translucency and aesthetics, making it the preferred material for visible front teeth. Zirconia is harder and more opaque, making it better suited to back teeth under higher chewing forces. At Picasso, Emax crown costs NZD 600/unit with a 7-year warranty; Zirconia costs NZD 467/unit with a 5-year warranty.
Can I have veneers on some teeth and crowns on others?
Yes — this is common. Many patients have crowns on damaged or root-canalled back teeth for structural support, and veneers on the front 6–10 teeth for cosmetic improvement. Dr. Emily Nguyen plans each tooth individually, selecting the most conservative restoration that meets both the structural and aesthetic requirement.
How long do I need in Vietnam for veneers or crowns?
Both veneers and crowns are completed in a single trip of approximately 7–10 days. Preparation and impressions are taken in the first appointments, the laboratory fabricates the restorations over 3–5 working days, and the final fit and bonding or cementing takes place at the last appointment. No second trip is required.
